Sailing Through the Panama Canal by Jolly Sienda Photography and Studio

Did you know it takes nearly a day to pass through the Panama Canal with it’s three locks and Gatun Lake? Last March 2025, Rich and I with about 1,000 passengers including crew members sailed on the Holland America Zaandam ship entering the area and waiting our turn at about 6 am on the Atlantic Ocean and finishing on the Pacific Ocean after 7 pm. For us, it was an unforgettable journey to see and experience this master engineering feet. Below are photos of our day.

Antigua Guatemala Photojournalism by Jolly Sienda Photography and Studio

Oh my heart! Visiting Antigua, Guatemala was a dream to come. It was our favorite country stop during our 15-day Central America and Panama Canal cruise, March 2025. The ancient Spanish colonial old town of Antigua is rich with culture, history, old world charm and photojournalist opportunities. The people, the colors, beautiful handmade tapestries, cobblestone stone streets, cathedrals and public squares are enchanting. And, the views of the active volcano Volcán de Fuego, Volcano of Fire, is seen from the town. I will visit Guatemala again. We barely scratched the surface - but this trip gave us a beautiful taste of what there is there. I love it so much! Photos by Jolly Sienda Photography and Studio.

Happy Earth Day 2020! Earth Photos Too Make You Smile!!

Our Earth is 4.54 billions years old! The earth is precious. It’s the air we breath, the land we walk on, the land we want our children and their children to have, and as Climate Change shows temperatures are rising on land and on the high seas, drought, changing weather patterns, forest fires, pollution…all of these things put our Earth at risk. So, it’s up to us to do everything we can. Jolly Sienda Photography, based in the greater Puget Sound area (Bremerton, Washington), captures moments in time. Here are some images to celebrate our Earth!

A Day at the Beach at Fripp Island and Exploring Savannah

There’s nothing like having your toes in the sand, the sound of the surf, finding seashell treasures on the beach, and exploring the antebellum architecture and historic squares of Savannah, Georgia, and Fripp Island, South Carolina. Our family has roots in both areas so every other year or so, we travel there to enjoy some family time and southern hospitality. Here are some favorite pictures of the trip featuring cultural photography and landscape photography of the Spanish Moss and the easy island lifestyle.

Travel Photography - How to Capture the Local Culture of a Place - Be a Story Teller!

When I’m discovering a new place and culture, I am eager to capture, with my camera equipment, how people live and something unique about the place. I enjoy watching people and walking the streets. I look for color, every day lifestyle, movement, and dogs and cats. I take photos using different light sources and angles. To protect my knees, I wear knee-pads, so I can get down low to photograph my subject without pain. No matter where I am, I am always looking for a story to document in my photographs. I believe if you start to think about telling a story with your photographs, you will see improvement in your photos too. Here are some photos from our recent trip to Patagonia (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and the Falkland Islands). Enjoy!

When your shooting - using a natural frame, like the tree limb adds something of interest to the photograph. The Coca-cola photo is nice; however having the lady selling her vegetables and the bike adds even more interest an authenticity to the image. And, when you are photographing indoors with flash remember to turn up the ISO on your camera. The photo on the left is a graffiti image of Pedro Bonifacio Palacios, an Argentine poet; iconic Coca-Cola signage and local lifestyle, and the dome of Santera Cathedral in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Stupendous Ring of Fire Mountains in Patagonia's Chilean and Argentina Fjords

Have you ever dreamed of seeing the ‘End of the World’? Or, checking off those ‘1001 Things to See and Do Before You Die’? Our recent trip to South America and Patagonia provided us some of the world’s most dramatic scenery; unveiling places few ever see. The weather too, in this area, can change so quickly; from calm to ferocious gale force winds preventing ships from traveling around the Cape Horn or arriving safely in Port Stanley, Falkland Islands. Boy, did we luck out! In fact, the captain of our cruise ship said, “This is the calmest it has ever been, on my watch, sailing around the Cape Horn” The following images were taken on our journey. Argentine Tango and Chilean Cueca Dancing Sways to Sexy Rhythms

During our recent trip to Patagonia with stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Montevideo, Uruguay, Santiago and Puerto Varis, Chile, we learned a lot about the history of the sexy and sublime Argentine tango and the coy and colorful Cueca folk dance.

JollySiendaPhotography-5920.jpg

Tango originated in the late 1800’s along the River Plate and the colorful port town of La Boca, Argentina. Slaves, brothels, and men first danced together to the pattern beats of the bandoneon. Over time, the dance was accepted by middle class and is seen today throughout this part of South America.

Photo trip to Columbia River Gorge for Autumn Color and Cool Photography Ops!!

We made the loop, driving on Highway 84 (Oregon) and Highway 14 (Washington) going to Maryhill, Washington, up to Hood River, Oregon, White Salmon, Washington, and too Trout Lake, Washington. Both Mount Adams and Mount Hood shined with new snow and the mountains were surrounded by beautiful Autumn color. Here are some landscape photo pics from the trip!

Autumn Nature Photography Where You Live! Sign Up for My Photography Classes!

I enjoy all of the seasons of the year. I especially love Autumn and its rich, warm, colors; red, yellow, orange, purple, and green! When I get free time in the early morning or late afternoon to go outside into nature I’m feeling a bit of zen. Our earth gives us gifts of paradise each day to enjoy. When I get to play with my cameras and lens I’m really in the zone.

Adventure Travel Photography in Morocco!

Traveling to Morocco has been on my bucket list for years! I spent one day in Tangiers in 1987 (ferry crossing from Spain). The intriguing sights, sounds, smells, and overall exotic feel called my name. Dreams can come true! In April 2018, my partner and I spent 17 days exploring Morocco. We traveled by car over 1,400 miles, passing through seaside towns, lush green agricultural landscapes, small villages each with their own mosque, up and down through the Rif and the Atlas Mountains, rode camels at the amazing Sahara Desert, and traveled through the rugged and tropical Dades Gorge -- all of this was now ours to share with you!

Our driver, Ali, told me daily, "Keep your camera ready because you never know what you're going to see." Boy, was he right!

Photographing the people, places, and culture of Morocco ignited my senses, made me SMILE,  and fueled my passion to capture the best in international photojournalism. Ali was right, you never know what could be around the corner.

Exotic Morocco will bring me wonderful memories that will last a lifetime! How about you? Reach out to me if you are interested in travel photography. I'd love to hear from you!
